Farmers’ threat

PA Wellington Farmers yesterday threatened an angry reaction if the Government made big cuts in the agricultural sector after the announcement by the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, of a $3.2 billion Budget forecast deficit. Addressing a wool and meat conference in Wellington, the president of Federated Farmers, Mr Brian Chamberlin, said Mr Lange had announced that the expenditure of the big three — health, welfare and education — would not be touched.

This meant big cuts in other areas, specifically defence and agriculture, Mr Chamberlin said.

“With a massive and growing overseas debt, it is absolutely crazy to be cutting expenditure in the only sector which can increase export earnings.” -Farmers were already bearing a totally unfair burden of Government restructuring. Mr Chamberlin suggested the Government should instead reduce social welfare spending and deliver an affordable social policy.
