Advertising volumes falling

PA Wellington Declining advertising volumes show that metropolitan newspapers now have to cope with the same recession provincial publishers have battled for the last two years, says the executive director of the Newspaper Publishers’ Association, Mr Patrick Greene.

Drops in the volume of advertising lodged with daily newspapers so far this year showed signs of becoming a trend, Mr Greene said. The downturn was showing in all three classes of advertising the N.P.A. monitored — classified, retail and national — but the effects were patchy, varying from paper to paper and within regions. “The metropolitan papers are now having to deal with the same recession the provincial papers have been coping with,” Mr Greene said.
