Fish claim call backed
PA Wellington The work of the Waitangi Tribunal should not be halted, say two of the central figures representing Maoridom in the Muriwhenua fishery debate. The Maori Council’s chairman, Sir Graham Latimer, and Te Runanga o Muriwhenua’s executive director, Mr Matiu Rata, say there is merit in suggestions of having’ a period of consolidation now, but the tribunal’s work should proceed.
In Wednesday’s Parliamentary debate on the Waitangi Tribunal’s Muriwhenua fishery report, the Opposition leader, Mr Bolger, said the Government should put a pause on the tribunal’s work. This would avoid a clash between heightened expectations in Maoridom and fear and anxiety among Europeans. Clarifying his remark yesterday, Mr Bolger said his comments should not be taken as a proposal to abolish the tribunal.
