Focus on people
The Governor-General, Sir Paul Reeves, focused local government representatives’ aims in reform on people, when he addressed the Local Government Association conference.
Representatives should consider ways that other institutions in the community, such as churches and schools, could strengthen the family unit, Sir Paul said.
“I am concerned for children, raised in poverty; for children who grow up with socially isolated young mothers and without minimum family support.” The family was being “pulled out of shape” and considering ways to strengthen it was important, said Sir Paul.
