AU eyes on juveniles ait Alexandra Park tonight

Special correspondent Auckland l Most interest at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting at Alexandra Park this evening will focus on the two-year-old pacers as they contest the prelude round of tomorrow week’s $150,000 Two-Year-Old Championship. Eight of the nine youngsters whi<?h fought out the finish of the CIGNA Sires’ Stakes Final last month have accepted for the two $lO,OOO Benson and Hedges Preludes, over 1700 metres. Hammer, which scored a courageous win at' Alexandra Park on May 28, will dominate the betting in the first “heat,” in spite of drawing awkwardly at No. 13. His' trainer, Don Dwyer, has marked time with Hammer since the CIGNA Filial and he is looking forward to next clash with the best two-year-olds in New Zealand. “I haven’t done much with him since his last race,” said Dwyer earlier this week. “But this run will sharpen him up and, rest assured, he’ll be spot on for the big one.” A southerner, Defoe, could provide Hammer with stiff competition. Defoe had no real chance to do better than eighth in the CIGNA Final after becoming trapped back on the rails. The time before, however, Defoe led all the way and scored a comfortable win in a heat of the Sires’ Stakes at Forbury Park on April 23. This evening Defoe, a compact colt by Stampede, has drawn perfectly at No. 1 and should give a good account of himself. The race will be made interesting by the inclusion of some fine fillies —

Diplomacy, Jodi Vance and Gitten, which are trained at Clevedon by Roy and Barry Purdon. The Purdons also have the promising colt, Cavaliere Servente, entered for the second prelude, where he will meet the Sapling Stakes winner, Inky Lord. After tiring to fifth in the CIGNA Final, Inky Lord proved too strong for the best southern two-year-olds at Ashburton on June 6. On his visit to Alexandra Park last month, Inky Lord showed a tendency to run off on the bends and he will have to be on his best behaviour this evening. There is little doubt that, after drawing well at No. 2, Inky Lord will start at cramped odds. Neroship looked most unlucky when third behind Hammer and Innocent Arc in the Sires’ Stakes Final. Although he has drawn badly he must rate highly. The fair sex will be represented in the second prelude by Las Vegas Lady, Easy Guess and a Taranaki visitor, Fast Spender. Of the three, Fast Spender, which is unbeaten. in two starts, looks the best Vulcan Lady, the 1987-88 Wrightson “Filly of the Year,” will attempt to complete a hat-trick of wins in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the $13,000 Shoes and Things Pace. Chapel Maid, the Waikato Oaks winner, and shock DB Flying Fillies Stakes victor Genuine Product, will not make her task easy. Another feature on the programme will be the rematch between the two fine South Island two-year-old trotters, Sundon and Idle Pride, in the John F. Jones Mobile Trot. -
