Old Nick, sprightly veteran in peak form

Special correspondent Auckland The high peak of form with which Old Nick is winding up his racing promises to continue at the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting at Te Rapa tomorrow. Within a couple of months of turning 10-years-old, Old Nick has managed two wins, a second placing and a fifth in his last four attempts. Everything going to plan his owner, George Molander, will retire him to stud next spring, with stake earnings that could well top $150,000. Old Nick raised his tally to about $126,000 when winning the Carbine Club Trophy on the first day of the Great Northern carnival. That was his twelfth success. The Cambridge Stud Gold and Ivory 1600 is the race tomorrow that gives him the chance of his thirteenth win with a first prize that would bring his stake earnings to $139,000. All this from a horse which did not race as a two-year-old or a three-year-old and which through a remarkable variety of misadventures, has had more layoffs from racing than his connections would care to remember. Last time at Te Rapa Old Nick finished second and went just about as close as could be to winning over this 1600 metres. His success at Ellerslie was achieved decisively after he had been in close touch to the pace all the way. In that one he carried 57kg so he is not doing at all badly, up just half a kilogram tomorrow, the scale of weights appearing to be down only slightly. Old Nick should certainly be too good again for the equal fourth placegetters, in the Carbine Club Trophy, La Benatar and Ivy- Star, though they have to be prospects for some of the stake. Perhaps the hardest for Old Nick to beat will, be Mister Tee, an Awapuni four-year-old gelding which gives the

impression of having made a fair amount of improvement. Mister Tee managed a couple of middle-distance wins in class three last November then a close second behind Flying Luskin over 1600 metres at Awapuni. Since back from a summer letup he has had three starts for a third placing at Rotorua on May 28, another at Wanganui, on June 6 and a fourth in a class 1 1600 at Awapuni last Saturday. Mister Tee ran on solidly each time, very likely he will be one of the better finishers in this one. Rongonui went sufficiently well when third in a class 2 1600 metres on Ellerslie’s third day, last Saturday, to be allowed a chance and Shearkhan, a disappointment last time, on the middle day of the Great Northern Carnival, is certainly capable of better. It was about this time last year that Rongonui came back into form with a second placing at Avondale then two wins in heavy ground at Te Rapa. He might'have reached the front a bit too early for his own good at Ellerslie last Saturday, giving way in the finish to Spanish Star arid another in this race, Majoright.
