Tale of slave-smuggling
A villain lurks among these characters from the Walt Disney Home Video release, “The Liberators.” With humour and a practised eye, the video tells of the Underground Railroad which smuggled thousands of slaves to freedom out of the South
in the years before the Civil War. Larry B. Scott takes the part of William Jackson, a runaway slave who returns again and again to the South to bring groups of escapers to freedom. His co-conspirator, John Fairfield, is played by Robert Carradine.
Renee Jones plays Fairfield’s love, who he will try to set on the road to freedom after she is terribly beaten. Cynthia Wall takes the part of a Southern lass bred to wield a whip and to have people among her family’s possessions. The 90-minute video has been released in
New Zealand by Video One. It brings together again two of the stars of the film, “Revenge of the Nerds,” in a well-made video based on a true story. “The Liberators” is a pleasantly sentimental slice of history. -D.C.
