CHRISTCHURCH SEIDO’S head instructor, Renzie Hanham, now has the exalted grading of sixth dan in his karate style. Hanham, making what was about his ninth trip to New York for training at the world headquarters, was recently regraded, along with Andy Barber (Nelson) by the ninth dan, Tadashi Nakamura. After some weeks training in New York Hanham went on to England to look at karate clubs there. LONG GONE are the days when New Zealand Olympic Games teams were accompanied by the father or mother of one of the competitors to act as a general dogs-body for the competitors. The Kiwi contingent for the forthcoming summer Olympics in Seoul will be accompanied by 46 officials. The equestrian group alone has 14 appendages, including a farrier, a veterinarian, and numerous grooms.
