U.S. deficit widens
NZPA-Reuter Washington The broadest measure of U.S. trade performance, the current account deficit, widened to 5U539.75 billion in the first three months of the year from a revised $U533.52 billion in the 1987 fourth quarter, the Commerce Department said. While the first quarter deficit was slightly larger than financial analysts had expected, the 1987 current account gap was revised sharply down to $U5153.968 from the previously reported gap of JU5160.698. Financial analysts had expected the first quarter current account deficit to be around SUS3BB.
