Orions guide trawler to crippled yacht

PA uckland Crews of Air Force Orions yesterday -guided a Japanese fishing boat more than 240 km to rescue two Aucklanders from their crippled yacht south-east of Norfolk Island.

One Orion began searching for the eightmetre yacht Procyon on Thursday afternoon after an emergency signal from its locator beacon was intercepted by a U.T.A. flight from Australia to New Caledonia.

The first Orion spotted the Procyon, when a man and a woman on board fired a red flare and continued emergency signals. Squadron Leader “Ching” Fuller said in Auckland yesterday that the aircraft dropped communications gear, in-

eluding hydrophones,' to the yacht but the crew made no. effort to retrieve them. A second Orion flew from Whenuapai Air Base to divert a Japanese fishing boat Ohgishima Maru to rescue the pair. Heavy seas and a 25knot wind delayed the rescue two hours. “ ■ Details of the rescued couple were unclear last evening because of language problems in radio contacts . with/ the Ohgishima s Maru as it steamed towards Auckland. Squadron Leader Fuller said the man hade a broken limb. His com?? panion was uninjured,; but was apparently unable to sail the yacht, which had lost its rudder and part of the mast. .
