Kirwan ‘will play’

John Kirwan will play on the right wing in the first test against Wales at Lancaster Park today. That was the confident statement from the New Zealand team manager, John Sturgeon, yesterday afternoon after the All Blacks had held a private training run at Rugby Park.

“He’s fit and sound and will play,” said Mr Sturgeon. Kirwan, who has been suffering from a back twinge which has moved to the back of the thigh, jogged lightly at training.

The Welsh team manager, Rod Morgan, said his test XV struck no problems in its final training run at Lancaster Park South. Spirits had lifted with the arrival of the two replacements, Nigel Davies and Mark Jones.

The Welsh players took the opportunity of surveying the pitch for today’s test and they were impressed by what they saw.

“Immaculate,” said Mr Morgan, “the boys are looking forward to a good game on a good ground.”
