Wendy’s Legend gives sprinters racing lesson

The recently imported greyhound, Wendy’s Legend, gave the open sprinters something to think about when he ran away with the DB Sprint at the Ashburton County Greyhound Racing Club’s non-totalisator meeting at Chertsey on Sunday. The Ray Adcocktrained brindle dog dwelt a little at the start, but soon overcame that and took the lead going to the first bend. Metallic Bandit and Club Havoc chased hard but could not overhaul the well travelled dog and he won the 295 m event in 17.305.

Wendy’s Legend started his racing career in Ireland, where he had 10 starts for five wins in distances varying from 302 m to 525 m. He was then sent to Australia where his career record reads 16 starts for four wins, two of these at Horald Park.

Wendy’s Legend is by an American sire, Sandman, a dog which has had one of the biggest impacts

on Irish breeding (in modern times) by siring winners of the English and Irish Derbys. Although not achieving great results himself on the track due to a recurring shoulder problem, Sandman is a litterbrother to world class performers, while Whisper Wishes which was a big winner on the racetrack is one of Sandman’s sons making it big as ’ a sire in England. Wendy’s Legend, which was previously known as Minnie’s Legend before coming to New Zealand, is out of the top performer Wendy’s Pet, and there is no doubt that this line will provide an interesting alternative to breeders here.

Other winners were: Sal Makhan (CO; 530 m; 32.035), Golden Satin (C2; 530 m; 31.515), Mainland Magic (C2; 530 m; 31.445), Canterbury Bell (C2; 295 m; 17.945), Betsy Glider (Cl; 295 m; 17.845), Orchestral (CO; 295 m; 17.665), Silent Jewel (Cl; 530 m; 31.745), Bobby Hobbs (Cl; 32.065).
