A financial seminar for women

There has been a growing awareness in recent years that it is not only possible, but highly desirble for women to put themselves into a financially independent situation.

At the same time, there is a great need for more information and facts to be available if women are going to cater for their special needs.

As more women are making their mark in the workplace they are taking more responsibility for their own lives. This includes financial responsibility.

To help women cope with financial responsibilities; a special financial planning seminar is being held in Christchurch on June 8, at the Carlton Mill

Lodge Motel at 19 Bealey Avenue.

The seminar will run between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. It is being presented by Sheryl Nicholls and Jill Wyld in association with the Broad-Base Consulting Group. There is no charge for attendance and the seminar is expected to be informal and friendly. Sheryl Nicholls is one of New Zealand’s most experienced women’s financial planning advisors. She began organising financial planning seminars for women from her Dunedin base in 1983. Since then, she has taken her seminars all around the South Island.

Sheryl has also been involved in seminars run by the Otago Polytechnic,

W.E.A. and groups such as the R.E.A.P., which is a rural educational group.

In March, Sheryl Nicholls organised Dunedin’s first Women’s Expo. This was a threeday event comprising exhibits, seminars, and stage presentations covering areas of interest to women. The show was visited by women from throughout New Zealand. Her special interest, however, is financial planning for women and she gives these statistics taken from the International Labour Organisation study presented to the United Nations Women’s Conference in Copenhagen in 1980.

Women do two thirds of the world’s work, provide 45 per cent of the

world’s food, have 10 per cent of the world’s income and only one per cent of the world’s property. The Christchurch seminar is being organised by Jill Wyld, who is well known in the life insurance industry. During the past year, she has been associated with the Broad-Base Consulting Group. Broad-Base is a group of independent advisors. These comprise in-house and associated corporate consultants who advise clients in ail areas of financial arrangements, including taxation, business and personal insurance, investment planning, and other financial services.

One may well ask why

there is a need for financial planning? According to statistics, only about five per cent of people reaching retirement are able to say they are financially independent. The main reasons for this situation are, usually, a lack of clear-cut financial goals, lack of planning, or both. It seems that more and more people are enlisting the services of a financial planner to seek advice on the various investment options available.

A good financial planner will have the skills necessary to co-ordi-nate the products offered by banks, building societies, accountants, sharebrokers, insurance companies and other organisations.
