Claire Tomalin, author of a recent biography, has described Katherine Mansfield’s life as “modern and busy” with “the shape of a classic tragedy.” Using the material above, describe what Ms Tomalin means. 2. There will be a considerable amount of material produced about Katherine Mansfield throughout this centennial year. During the next months, compile a clipping file from newspapers and magazine articles on this writer and her work. (Give the material to your school library vertical file at the end of the year.) 3. Pick one of Katherine Mansfield’s short stories and suggest ways in which it draws on the author’s own experience. 4. Katherine Mansfield wrote: “I thank God I was born in New Zealand. A young country is a real heritage though it takes one time to recognise it.” (Letter to her father, March, 1922.) What do you think she meant? Do you think she was right?

NZATE Conference Language — Power and Empowering

This page is the third of several 1988 “Education exPress” pages which are designed for secondary English classes, to highlight the theme of the NZATE (English teachers) Conference which will be held in Christchurch from May 15 to May 19. The Conference is expected to attract considerable numbers of primary and secondary teachers. Keynote speakers will be Keri Hulme, Marilyn Waring, Warwick Elley, Sonja Davies, and David Hill.
