SOCCER NZPA-Reuter London Oxford United, which entered English soccer’s first division amid much razzamatazz three years ago, departed with barely a whimper during the week-end. A 3-1 defeat at Newcastle was enough to send Oxford scuttling back to the second division, a fate which has carried an air of inevitablity since the early weeks of the season last August With the championship trophy already claimed by Liverpool — understandably in a relaxed mood at Chelsea, where it drew 1-1 — attention switched to the other end of the table. Though a number of clubs are still mathematically in peril, Portsmouth, beaten 1-0 at Coventry, looks likeliest to join Oxford and Watford — condemned last Saturday — in division two. With two games remaining, the battle to avoid the third relegation spot lies between Portsmouth (35 points), West Ham United (39), Charlton (40) and Chelsea (41), which was unfortunate not to collect maximum points against Liverpool. Chelsea always looked the more threatening side but with the Zimbabwean goalkeeper, Bruce Grobbelaar, in outstanding form, it had to wait until Gordon Durie’s seventy-second minute penalty to take the lead its outfield superiority merited. But the Londoners' advantage lasted a mere three minutes, England’s Footballer of Year, John Barnes, earning the visiting champion a point its scarcely deserved. Liverpool almost inflicted even more serious damage on Chelsea when it was awarded a penalty four minutes from time, but the new goalkepeer, Kevin Hitchcock, pulled off a superb save to deny the England forward, Peter Beardsley.
