Superannuation
Sir,—“l’ve paid my taxes, so I’m entitled to it” — a sentiment so often expressed in support of universal superannuation. It is sad that the cradle-to-the-grave mentality is so firmly entrenched that we. stand in line for handouts, irrespective of need. Perhaps it is the fear of missing out on something that drives us. Ignored is the reality that the revenue cake is finite. Every dollar handed out to those who don’t need it is one less for essential services — education and health, in particular. Until some scheme whereby pensions are funded in advance is established, national superannuation will eat up an increasingly larger slice of the cake. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if citizen and politician alike could rise above selfinterest for more worthy collective ideals? — Yours, etc., DENIS HAMPTON. April 29, 1988.
