Man jailed for LSD sale
A ■! I IH-! ! A prison sentence was inevitable for a man who sold 59 LSD] trips to an undercover] constable, Mr Justice Holland said in the H gh Court] yestqr]day. His Honour jailed Duncan Lauder Young, aged 21\, unemployed,' for a ytfar, on three charges of supplying a class! A drug between November, 1986, ahd May, 1987. I | I I |Mr Tony ] : Garrett appeared for Young, and Mjr Mark Zarifeh for the Crown. , i Mr Justice Holland said that he ] would take 'into account ] that I although Young had previous convictions none related to dnig dealing, and he had not been imprisoned before. (Young had been extradited from Australia because of the j delay in bringing the prosecution caused 'by the continuation of the work of an undercover constable. (There was no suggestion that Young had left trie country to avoid arrest. (Very sensibly Young had acknowledged his guilt, practically from the beginning, and he was entitled to a substantial credit for that.' ■ ] j He had difficulty in accepting submissions by counsel that Young received only $5 per trip oh the first supply, nothing on the second
n!' i JPn H supply and although he had expectations for the i third supply he received no reward for that.] i ] "In the light of a person I ] who is acknowledged, riot to be a user of drugs of such kind I find that ex- ! planation incredible. 1 ; ] ! i“I also find 'it signifi- ! cant that you I have instructed] him to say'that this really as a matter of friendship! and as a favour,” his Honour said. ] | I' b ! ]■] Young might (more honestly have said toll the ] probation officer that he had done it with the intenton of making money. The fact that he did not succeed in making muqh money perhaps reflected on his incompetencejas a dealer, but he did] not regard Young as a major dealer in class A drugs. Clearly he was only an intermediary. Mr Justice Holland said that he would take ! into account that Young! still had a relationship ] [With the mother of his child, and that he (should be encouraged ultimately to lead a law-abiding life. . I ( “LSD is a most dangerous drug which can cause terrible harm. Those (who are in the business of supplying it are told from time to time they must expect little mercy from the Courts,” Mr Justice Holland said.
