Williams racer tested
Nigel Mansell tracktested the new Williams FWI2 Formula One contender at a secret venue recently. ji 'I The new • racer, j designed by Patrick Head and built around the 13.5litre Judd ;V8 atmospheric engine, is very small. ' It is much! smaller than last year’s Honda turbo-powered FWII, and !iI i i
the compact nature of its rear end suggests that the Williams-designed and developed six-speed transverse gearbox is employed. During the shake-down tests the FWI2 ran with its engine and gearbox uncovered. It is not known whether Williams Grand Prix Engineeritjg, Ltd, intends to fit a cowling over the drive train.
