Smoking
Sir, —Your !’ correspondent from the Wills Tobacco Company (March 21) is quite incorrect in asserting that cigarette brand advertising does not lead to greater cigarette consumption. There ape several international studies showing that it does and we (have just; completed a study which confirms this for New Zealand. The research showed that when cigarette advertising increased so, too ; did trie level of cigarette smoking in New Zealand. Furthermore, the advertising [continued, to influence smoking, levels for several months after it appeared.—Yours, etc., (Dr) S.’ J. Chetwynd, Senior lecturer, (r>r) J. E. WELLS, Senior biostatistician, Christchurch School ! .'!’ . of! Medicine. March) 21, 1988.
