Fourth transplant
PA Auckland New Zealand’s fourth heart transplant was successfully completed at Auckland’s Green Lane Hospital yesterday. Surgery began i late in the afternoon and continued into the evening. No details of the patient, recovering in the intensive-care unit last evening, were given. Families of both the recipient and the donor wished to remain anonymous and did not want details to go to the news media.
said a hospital spokeswoman, Ms Wendy Mehaney.
Nurses at Green Lane Hospital were on strike yesterday in protest gainst the State Sector Bill, but the transplant patient's care will not be affected because emergency areas are not part of the strike action. New' Zealand’s third heart transplant patient, Mrs Jennifer Wilson, spent a quiet day yesterday after her second bout of rejection problems.
