The chairwoman of the Waimairi District Council, Mrs Margaret Murray, presents Mr John Walsh with a community service plaque in recognition of; his efforts for the beautification of metropolitan Christchurch. Mr Walsh has judged
the Christchurch Beautifying! Association’s garden competition for 15 years; and judged for the Canterbury Horticultural society for 14 years. He has also been involved in organising and judging the Memorial Avenue garden! competition for many! years.
In " presenting the award I at a recent Waimairi District Council meeting, Mrs Murray said that Mr Walsh was a man with ideas about beautification,” of which had been sdopted by trie Waimairi district and neighbouring areas. I
She said that organising garden ; and street competitions; was a timeconsuming task. Inspections begin in early November, and by ! the end of January Mr Walsh will usually have covered more than 5000 km, selecting streets for the judges’ final decision.
