Rosehill work for European stayers

NZPA-AAP Sydney ; European stayers, La Glorieux, Vaguely Pleasant and Highland Chieftain, will step up the pace in preparation for the SNZI.O9 million H. E. Tahcred Stakes when they work at Rosehill over the week-end.

The trio of European champions arrived in Australia last Wednesday week and immediately went into quarantine, where they will remain until next Wednesday. French gallopers, La Glorieux and Vaguely Pleasant, and the British representative Highland Chieftain, made their first visit to Rosehill on Wednesday for the traditional European jog and canter workout. i With just nine days remaining before their weight-for-age clash with the cream of Australian and New Zealand talent, La Glorieux and Vaguely Pleasant will gallop for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere when

they step out for fast work at Rosehill tomorrow morning. The pair will be asked to work a solid 2400 m before returning to the track on Sunday morning for more jog and canter while Highland Chieftain will have his first look at an Australian starting gate when he jumps out of the machine at the start of a 1600 m hit-out. "The French contingent aren’t interested in jumping out of the gate. That’s not their style,” Sydney Turf Club racecourse manager John Jeffs, said. “La Glorieux and Vaguely Pleasant will work over 2400 m on Saturday morning while Highland Chieftain will work over a 1600 m with a local galloper — probably Double Schedule — on Sunday. “All three horses will be back on Monday for more slow work and they will move to Brian May-field-Smith’s stables when they are released from quarantine next Wednesday/’
