Jay Ardee strong chance at Timaru

Jay Ardee, a gallant second to the talented Hayden Bromac in last week’s Hororata Cup. should prove too strong for a useful field in the Coruba Rum Handicap Pace, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Timaru Harness Racing Club’s meeting at the Phar Lap Raceway tomorrow. The Lorraine Grant-owned and trained six-year-old seemed likely to gain reward for some consistent, and often unluckv. efforts when he issued a spirited challenge 200 m out last week but was unable to overhaul Hayden Bromac at the end of a swiftly run 3200 m — the winner recorded 4:10.4 — and was beaten by a length. Some well-performed stayers finished behind the son of Nardin’s Byrd last week and although tomorrow’s 3200 m feature has attracted several form runners most would need plenty of luck in the running to have any chance of containing Jay Ardee.

Lorcan, the closest of seconds to the promising Fiddler at Addington last week, has drawn nicely off the limit — Jay Ardee starts from 10m — and could prove troublesome to the likely, favourite if allowed his own rules in front. The son of Lordship will race with an open; 1 tyridle — he was wearing halfblinkens -when caught at the finish by Fiddler in his last race — and may be recapturing his best form again. Nat's Girl is a genuine stayer with definite prospects here, i while Silver Beam, Noble Eden and Spitfire are all racing well enough to warrant solid support. Bay Timer, a fine sixth behind Quick Away at Ashburton last week after losing a conservative 50m at the start, may prove I best value in the second leg, the DB Handicap pace, for fillies and mares. She was declared unruly from standing starts after her latest outing and from that position may be able to begin on terms with her rivals.
