Riders a problem for Gibbs at Paeroa

Special correspondent I Auckland The Matamata trainer, Jim Gibbs, was yesterday facing the problem of securing riders for' three of his four runners in the big race at the Paeroa Racing Club's meeting tomorrow, i with the mount on Lady Tristana, a real prospect, going begging. ’ 1 As well as Lady Tristana, Gibbs has Dark Moments, Dark Lace, both recent winners, and Dungarvan as acceptors for the $25,000 L. and P. Cup, though Dark Lace is awaiting re-entry. He had engaged Tony Allan for Dark Moments.but had not made any commitment regarding the other three. It seems, however, that his two apprentices, Reese (Jones and Darryn Weatherley, will get their chances. Weatherley is likely for Dungarvan. Jones will ride Dark Lace, if.she makes the field, otherwise he will be considered for Lady Tristana! Jones, aged 16, is already gaining some attention as a rider of promise. Dark Lace, as a lightweight in form, would be a good rider, but no better, probably, than Lady Tristana, a six-year-old mare which joined Gibbs' stable early this year, after being trained by the Verners at Takanini. Lady Tristana, with eight wins, proved useful indeed when at Takanini and she

“ 'll I '' ' i ' gave every, indication of continuing! her good form when she finished third, (first up for Gibbs, in a! middle-distance at Matamata on February 20. ' | The Matamataj race, - won by Secret Ace, might have improved Lady Tristana because it was her first for six weeks. A help to her, also, could be the easier footing tomorrow. ' I | Dungarvan and Dark Moments (both did their latest racing at th|e Wellington Cup meeting, Dungarvan for a third and an eighth (Wellington Cup) and Dark Moments for an impressive win in a;2200 metres handicap! ■ ■ j Tomorrow's race has any number of other prospects, Derriaria, Solstice, Rationale and Cure just a- few of tjhem. Derriana (fourth) and Solstice (third) were both placed at weight-for-age last time they ran, Derriana inj the Airj New Zealand Stakes and Solstice, in Te Rapa’s Cambridge Stud! International. I Poetic Prince, a leading three-year-old, will be a centre of interest when he returns to racing in Paeroa’s otherimain race, the 1200 metres Majestic Horse Transport Handicap. It wil be Poetic Prince's first start since he finished fourth in the VRC Derby in Melbourne. Earlier in Melbourne he won the Caulfield Guineas then lost the race on a protest.
