Course specialists to dispute Hororata Cup finish

By

DAVID McCARTHY

If past performances on the track count for much Mr Magoo could be the one to test the top weight, Eye Full in the Printpac Hororata Cup Handicap at the jHororata meeting at Riccarton today. J

The grey was running on purposefully for third in the Simms Jones Handicap at the Riccarton Turf Clufb meeting two weeks ago and is well overdue to top off a . host of placed efforts on the course since winning a double here at the Canterbury Jockey Club's summer meeting over twelve months ago.

Mr Magoo has never won out of turn but his consistency at Riccarton must always be considered. In fact he has never failed to weigh ‘in, at distances beyond 1600 m in handicap gracing on the course when the track ( has been firm. While he has not been) in the winner’s, circle for longer Aan most in this field he has not been over rjaced either. He made his debut for the season at Banks ..Peninsula in October and then had a major setback whjen he crashed at Riccarton on the middle day of the CJC November carnival. He then ran third

over 1600 m at Riccarton. second in the James Hazlett Stakes at Wingatui (to Deerstalker) second, in the Timaru Cup (to Camallino Star): and then third to Moderation and Pericolini over 1800 m at Riccarton. when perhaps below peak. Before his Turf Club placing he had sixth in the Amberley Cup but only/after experiencing difficulty with the- turns during the running. Mr Magoo may never be a major cup winner but with time to wind up and in a race run at a good, even clip he is always a danger. He has 4.5 kg from Eye Full here and it could tip the scales his way. especially as rider Paul Richards has been associated with him only twice, for a first and a second placing. Whatever the case for Mr Magoo, Eye Full must be hard to beat. Her only failures at Riccarton past , 1600 m in handicap company: have come in last

November's Benson and Hedges Cup and the New Zealand Cup a week later. Eye Full has a turn of foot that Mr Magoo, and most others in this field, lack and she must be highly regarded. Hypatia is back from a moderate showing in the Wellington Cup where a hard track didn’t help. Before that she had been in capital form in the south and she has gone well fresh up in the past. Alberjon was a brave third in the Dunedin Gold Cup which gives him a chance here; Rapsea has not) come south for the holiday and has raced well at Riccarton in the past; Marc rarely goes a bad one here, and seems to have improved again, and Yourangsir could be at false odds.

If Hypatia proves successful in the Cup the Jackson stable could complete the double with the talented Ruff the hardest

to beat in the Lion Brown Handicap, the second leg. The diminutive but long-striding mare kept her reputation intact holding her place in the stretch in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham, a run which followed an unlucky second at Amberley and a first up win at Riccarton. Kaoru Heights is back from a freshener and with Grant Davison to aid his cause he is a danger being probably best suited to this distance. Mister York and Pericolini, Deerstalker and Middleman, and The Yapper and New Wine are all starters with credentials, Mister York being back to sprinting with Lance O’Sullivan up. Pericoline so consistent, Deerstalker a danger in sprint on the fresh side, the Yapper trying to extend a winning sequence to four and New Wine perhaps ready to repeat her outstanding form of last autumn.
