Girl held in police cell
The police were forced to hold; algirl, aged 16, in a police [ cell after the Kingslea Resource Centre refused to take her because of industrial action, the Children and Young Persons Court heard yesterday.; ; Sergeant Max South said he wanted to voice disapproval of the situation in which the police had found, themselves because of the action. Marks, aged 23, in Cathedral Sqaure on Monday evening. Mr Marks had sufferedpermanent brain damage five months ago when he wak attacked in the Shirlejf Lodge Tavern.' The girl also faces an alternate charge of demanding money with menace. She is further charged with assaulting and resisting a. constable. tvhen she appeared in court on Tuesday the girl was remanded in the custody of the Social Welfare
Department for two days. I Sergeant South said the [police were forced to take her ■ to the j cells when Kingslea refused to take [her. After discussions with [the department, the girl was left on Kingslea's I "doorstep.” | ■ [' She [was then taken to i Burwood Hospital for i treatment to an existing I injury to I her hand. Sergeant South [said that the police got in touch with the girl's mother who picked her up from Burwood. |;|
The girl was taken to al Social Welfare Department family .home the ( next day. , Judge McAloon re-| manded the girl until! March 24 in the depart-:' ment’s custody. He denied! an application for bail by Mr Mervyn Glue, who was| appearing for the girl. - ; . The Judge said it appeared to him that the department had a statu-: tory duty to accept a young person into its custody when the court made such an order.
