Weather open to guesses

The Meteorological Service has voted to strike in protest against the State Sector Bill. Service spokesmen said aircraft and shipping movements could be put in doubt. Public Service Association members of the Meteorological Service met yesterday in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland and voted to support the association’s national stoppage on Monday.
The action means New Zealanders will have to guess what weather is in store for the early part of next week.
Wellington and Christchurch P.S.A. delegates said last evening that a skeleton staff of nonP.S.A. workers would man
the national forecasting centre in Kelburn, Wellington. They would provide weather information related to "Life and property only.” !
Search and Rescue organisations ; will be given aviation and maritime forecasts, ! A service spokesman said that airline flights could be disrupted if the weather on Monday is marginal.
Air New Zea and would not comment on the effect of the service’s strike because it had not been “officially ; informed.” Ansett New Zealand executives could not be reached for comment late last evening.; j The strike action will begin at midnight on Sunday, March 13 and end 24 hours later. , |i
