PA Wellington A pair of rare North Island kokako (blue wattled crows) have been captured in the Matahina Forest in a salvage operation. Conservation officers from Rotorua and Whakatane erected nets 18 metres high in the tawa trees for the capture, said a senior conservation officer, Mr Keith Owen.

Once captured the birds were transferred , to Rotorua, where they will remain until a further kokako is caught. ' All three will then be transferred to Little Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf, a nature reserve administered by the Conservation Department? Several other kokakos had been placed in jthe reserve after successful

captures in the forest, Mr Owen said) The home of the kokakos, the Tram Road block of the Matahina Forest, will be clearfelled by Tasman Forestry, Ltd, which has bought the 500 ha block from New Zealand Forest Products, Ltd. The former Wildlife Service was allowed to catch any kokakos found before the deforestation.
