Spillage source
The source of a diesel spillage in the Avon River on Monday is believed to be damaged pipes at the Wharenui Swimming Pool. The pipes carried fuel used for heating. The chief engineer of the Christchurch Drainage Board, Mr Peter Hunt, said it appeared a contractor was working at the pool and the diesel accidentally leaked into the Riccarton main drain. He estimated less than 50 litres was involved. The oil, which formed a thin film on the river over about a kilometre, was washed out to sea without seriously affecting wildlife.
