Public forum to debate new art gallery
Nine speakers will address the topic of a new art gallery for Christchurch at a public forum on Monday evening. The forum follows ;up the annual meeting of [the Friends of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery and will be held in the gallery. [ On the platform 1 to debate the where, when, why and how of a new civic gallery will be university lecturers, the gallery's director, architects, a Christchurch City councillor, ah art critic and a museum and gallery consultant.
The keynote speaker will be Mr Ken Gorbey, a Wellington-based gallery consultant.
Other (speakers include the president of the Friends, Dr Peter Simpson; Ms Julie King, lecturer in art history ‘at Canterbury University; Dr Denis Dutton, lecturer in the philosophy of art at Canterbury University; Ms Penny Orme, an art critic; and Cr Alister James, chairman of the council’s cultural and community services committee.
Mr John Coley! will speak as the gallery's director while Mr Peter Beaven and Mr John Vial will put forward their views as architects.
Mr Vial will represent the Institute of Architects and Mr Beaven will speak as the advocate of the proposal to convert the old Government building in Cathedral Square to a new gallery. The forum will begin at 8 p.m. Admission of $2 will be charged.
