Victoria Square landscaping
Work on I landscaping Victoria Square (north of the Avon River will (begin as soon as tenders for the work have been approved. A Christchurch ] City Council sub-committee of three has been appointed to accept tenders fpr the work, estimated to cost about $400,000. Work will have to begin soon to have the] area landscaped (to ( coincide with the opening of the adjacent Parkroyal Hotel in October, i Members of the council’s parks and recreation committee were told yesterday that the I hotel would meet about half the costs of paving the area outside its entrance. Part of this area is hotel land. The rest of the area north of the Victoria ( Street bridge will be payed and
planted in a circular pattern.
Detailed plans of the landscaping have been prepared and some materials purchased. The cost of the work will be met from the cash in lieu central city account.
The work was to have been started in the present financial year and $150,000 was allocated. The complexity of the design work prevented a start before March 31.
I The hotel, Town Hall, Salvation Army and council management were involved in design discussions.
The landscaping north of the Avon has been designed to marry with that south of the river once a plan for Victoria Square is decided.
