Air passengers face disruptions

travel editor A (six-hour air' traffic controllers’ strike tomorrow — the first of a series of rolling stoppages planned for the next week — will disrupt the travel plans of thousands of airline passengers. The dispute, involving Public Service Association members throughout New Zealand, is about redundancies. Airports will be closed from' 6 a.m. until midday.Airlines will be unable to resume scheduled ser-
vices until the afternoon. Passengers on Qantas’s Thursday flight to Melbourne will have an earlier than expected departure. Instead of leaving at 6.30 a.m., QF 36 has been rescheduled to take off at 4.30 a.m. to clear New Zealand’s air traffic area before the strike begins. The airline asks passengers to check in at the airport no later than 3 a.m. Further strikes by air traffic controllers are planned for Saturday for
24 houijs, and beginning on Wednesday fori two days, and Friday for three days. | Air New Zealand hopes the dispute will be resolved. (Late last evening it' had not cancelled any domestic services, nor had it rescheduled its 8.05 a.m. flight (TE181) from Christchurch t(o Sydney. However, all passengers booked .on this flight should get in touch with the airline this morning to check whether any late decision has been made to reschedule the service.
