Kiwi Supreme ready for tough test

JEFF SCOTT

Devotees of Jack Smolenski-trained entrants for the classic races will be taking more than passing interest in Kiwi Supreme’s performance at the New Zealand Metropolitan meeting at Addington this evening.

Smolensk! took the tough but inexperienced Kiwi Supreme under his wing in Janudry and the successful Weedons mentor is well-satisfied with the progress they have made. But with the John Brandon Triple Crown series being launched in a fortnightj the Clever Innocence gelding faces his stiffest test since entering Smolenski's stable in the Chung Wah II Restaurant Mobile Pace this evening. Kiwi Supreme showed he could stick with the top three-year-olds when fourth in the Sires"' Stakes Final (to Dillon Deanj) and third in the Pickaberry Championship (to Carnforth) for Southland’s Kirk Larsen at the N.Z. Cup meeting in November. Used up in the running on both those occasions, Smolenski has set about teaching (he horse to come out froTn a trail and sprint, to smart effect in recent races. In four races for Smolenski, Kiwi Supreme has run two seconds and two firsts, the most impressive being a laststart! win at Addington on February 20, when he paced his last 800 m in 58s (storming over his last quarter in 28.35) to win going away from Quick Away. This evening he comes up against fellow Clever Innocence gelding, Wait a Morpent, Cardinal Star, Carnforth and

Charles Nero, in a small but interesting field and should go close to winning again. Wait a Moment has been under a cloud in recent weeks but looks his toughest rival. The Wigram-trained gelding was the best of Dillon Dean’s South Island rivals at the Canterbury Park meeting on February 7) and should be suited by the distance this evening. Cardinal Star can sprint and stay as well as most and from the ace should be in the firing line throughout for Bob Cameron, while Carnforth has been, freshened since last racing in January, but has been to the fore at recent workouts. Charles Nero, a third son of Clever Innocence in the first leg of the T.A.B. double, sprinted home sharply to beat Kiwi Supreme on the first evening of the New Brighton meeting last month, and adds to the form puzzle. Fiddler, freshened since winning a double at Blenheim last month, could keep his promising record moving in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Lance Ryan Brokers Pace. The Michael de Filippi-trained gelding resumed with a third at last week’s Addington trials and is trying for his fourth win in 10 starts this evening. Silver Beam, Beau Peer and Nat’s Girl look the main dangers.
