Cream of N.Z. drag-races to compete on Sunday

On Sunday March 13 the fastest drag racers in New Zealand will descend

on Ruapuna Park to participate in the Pegasus Bay Drags. For drag racing enthusiasts the air promises to be filled with the pungent fumes of nitro and shredded tyres. Wellington’s Garth Hogan, billed as “the fastest man in the world outside of the United States" will be a star turn in the Sydenham Park Chev Sales Top Fuel Duel. His dragster has been known to turn in speeds up to 242 miles per hour. Another North Island

attraction tipped to generate considerable interest is Alan Dunlop in

New Zealands' fastest Mustang Funny Car. Whangarei is the home town of the quickestmoving grandmother in the nation, Faye Grant in her 199 miles per hour Top Alcohol dragster. From Auckland will come the fastest AA/ Altered vehicle driven by Terry Rodgers. Warren Brown will also return to race his A/ altered dragster as will John Cole in his recordtopping A/Dragster. They will combine in top alcohol-fuelled action

with Ron Collett, Dave Jamison and Mark Rendle.

The inter-island ferry passenger lists will be swelled in the week preceeding the drags by the volume of North Island contestants participating in the Pegsus Bay Drags. Amongst race organisers the opinion is that the man to watch will be Garth Hogan. His all-American built Top Fuel Dragster can cover the quarter mile in only 5.68 seconds at a peak speed of 242.71 m.p.h. He will be match racing

Christchurch’s only Top Fuel dragster driver. Greg Hiddleston in his nitro-

burning 426 cubic inch Keith Black engine powered dragster. In the competition class from the north will be a good number ' of “altereds" to take on the cream of southern drivers. The Pro-Gas class will feature another of the nations’ fastest, the AA/ Hot Rod driven by Euan Mark which can cover the quarter mile in only nine seconds, at 150 m.p.h.

Robin Silk will return to drive his immaculate fuelinjected Z/28 Camaro.
