Dilley, Chatfield top bowling averages

Ewen Chatfield's out-

standing bowling contribution in the absence of Richard Hadlee is evident from the England-New Zealand cricket test averages.

Not only did Chatfield take 13 wickets at low cost, but such was his accuracy that he restricted the England batsmen to only 1.57 runs per over.

Chatfield's test wickettaking aggregate is 115, just one behind Richard Collinge, the third most successful of all News Zealand bowlers. The seemingly indefatigable Chatfield might yet overhaul Lance Cairns (130) to trail only Hadlee (373) on this country’s bowling roll of honour.

Of equal value to England was Graham Dilley, who claimed 15 inexpensive victims. No other bowler on either side averaged less than 30.

Mark Greatbatch completed his first test series with the marvellous batting average of 93.
