It was not there. Neither was the cat, once it realised what it was suspected of. j All that could be found was the freshly opened envelope, heavy, icrisp, embossed; worth a dollar itself of anybody’s money. BANK WITH SO-AND-SO, it proclaimed. We Look After You, it averred. Service, superior
standards. They gave the bank a ring to find out what the envelope, had once held, to ask that it be stopped, to obtain a serial number, C.I.D. for the use |of, before bringing in the constables. Sorr-ee! chortled the bank. |We had a pile of envelopes, they chuckled. We had a heap of cheques, warrants, dividends, scrip, certificates, and good stuff like that, they chirped. What we popped in the post, they guffawed, was a sackload of sealed, stamped (they wiped their streaming eyes) empty envelopes. All over town, they shrieked, slapping their thighs, all over town there are people at this very moment trying to telephone us. Ha hee hoo haw to ... Are you there 1 ?
