Tax argument lacks support

BRENDON BURNS,

political reporter

A ) Treasury argument against tax concessions for private superannuation idoes not appear to have) the support of the Minister of Finance, Mr Douglas. Mr Douglas released last Friday the Treasury paper on the changes to taxation of superannuation, | medical and life insurance (“The I Press,” March! 5).

He said it outlined the Government's reasons for

ending tax concessions in these areas.

One argument presented by the Treasury against the concessions was that “the Government already provides relatively generous retirement support in the form of national superannuation.”

That clashes with the publicly expressed views of Mr Douglas’s close associate, the Minister of Revenue, Mr de Cleene. He said in January that national superannuation was socially inequitable and should be scrapped.
