Smoking survey ‘terrible’
PA Wellington The Government has “regularly ducked” all effective ways of reducing smoking and this is reflected in the latest survey, says the anti-smoking group, A.S.H. A survey has shown that annual smoking rates among adults had remained close to 30 per cent for the last three years. Two thousand people aged 15 and over were interviewed.
An A.S.H. spokeswoman, Ms Deirdre Kent, said ' the survey’s results were "terrible" and reflected the Government’s success in “ducking” all effective ways of reducing smoking. The Government had not taken the advice of its own Toxic Substances Board to ban cigarette advertising, had not increased taxes regularly, and had made overtures about smoking in the workplace but had not done anything about it.
