Police shortages a 'national problem’
PA ;New Plymouth Police shortages are a national problem, says the national vice-president of the Police . Association, Mr Ron Richardson. Fewer I people were i entering the force than i were resigning, retiring or " leaving the service, and I the police? had asked the i Government for more staff. I I i Mr Richardson said the Minister jof Police, Mr Tapsell, had pledged his
support for more staff for the police but there had been no result. The problem not only appeared' in urban areas. Rural areas could be worse off, because police manpower was geared to the crime rate, he said.
If a vacancy in a rural station was! not filled quickly the power statistics of reported crime could undermine the area’s case for having a police station.
