Wind thwarts airship

Timaru reporter

New Zealand’s first airship mail flight was thwarted by winds :in Timaru yesterday. Wing Commander Gerry Turnbull was to fly the airship carrying 1200 special commemorative covers from the Timaru Philatelic Club but the winds prevented him getting airborne. He decided to “stand-by for i tomorrow.” ' i

Wing Commander Turn-

bull said winds were blowing at over 15 knots at 1000 ft and there was a danger that the craft would be swept away.

The airship is used by Montana Wines in Auckland to promote its products and will remain in Timaru until tomorrow. Mrs L. V. Millar, of the Timaru Philatelic Club, said the club heard the airship was coming to Timaru and decided to

prepare special commemorative covers. It is not the first time the club has been involved in such a venture. About four years ago the club brought mail from Fairlie and other parts of South Canterbury to Timaru by microlight. Once the airship completes its flights in Timaru, the commemorative covers will be stamped at the Timaru Post Office and then delivered.
