‘Bola’ no threat
NIGEL MALTHUS
Cyclone Bola, which at one stage appeared to be threatening the fleet in the Transfield Trans Tasman Challenge yacht race, has been officially downgraded into a deep depression as it crosses the northern North Island. The remaining boats were all pushing into head winds and big seas, but were handling the conditions reasonably well, said Mr Dave Dodd, a spokesman for the Richmond
Yacht Club in Auckland, last evening. There has been problems for some boats — some were thought to have turned to run before the wind for a time — but all were now heading in the right direction and there was no concern for their safety, he said. Only ; two boats have finished so far — Peter Blake’s 18m trimaran Steinlager I and the Australian 12m trimaran Verbatim.
The Richmond Yacht Club, which is handling the New Zealand end of the Sydney to Auckland race, is in radio contact with the fleet twice a day. Mr Dodd said that at 5 p.m. yesterday, the next boat on the water, and the front-running monohull, was the 18m Australian entry Crusader, which was off. Whangaroa Harbour. ' «. [
