D.S.I.R. scientists to continue bismuth trials

PA Wellington New Zealand scientists involved in the search for a higher temperature superconductor say they will continue their experiments with bismuth despite an American scientific breakthrough using a different element.

The leader of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research’s su-

perconductor project, Dr Jeff Tallon, said American progress outlined recently achieving zero resistance at minus 166 deg C. using thallibm was encouraging in 'the search for a higher temperature superconductor. The New! Zealand breakthrough had discovered superconductivity in bismuth material at minus ! 182 deg, C. This was not

zero resistance superconductivity like the American models. "We are confident we can reach zero conductivity at 165 using bismuth,” Dr Tallon said. The latest American results achieving zero conductivity represent a 6.6 deg C. increas in the highest temperature achieved for zero conductivity. :
