Coalcorp not for sale -yet
By
PETER LUKE,
political reporter
Coalcorp will not be sold by the Government this month, said the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, Mr Prebble, yesterday! Responding to recent speculation that Coalcorp might be privatised, Mr Prebble said the Cabinet had not considered its sale;
He rejected any suggestion it would be sold this financial year, ending on March 31.
Describing the suggestion as ludicrous, he said, “there are no such plans
and it will not happen.” I But Mr Prebble also believed that the Government had no reason to !stay involved in coalmining, and Coalcorp should be sold at an appropriate time to repay public debt.
He confirmed that some private firms had expressed interest in the part or total purchase of Coalcorp. The Government had not, however, invited or received any offer.
Mr Prebble said there was no pressure for a firesale of Coalcorp, as the Development Finance Corporation was the next organisation on the selling agenda.
