PA Masterton The home of a Masterton policeman was badly damaged by fire last evening. The constable’s wife and four children, aged between two and seven, escaped the blaze, the fourth such incident in Wairarapa in recent months. There were indications an accelerant was used in the 9 p.m. incident, Inspector Alec Waugh said; Police from Upper Hutt and Wellington will today join local officers investigating the fire. Inspector Waugh said "appropriate measures” were being taken to ensure the security of local staff.
The constable was on a hunting trip when the fire started. His family were to spend the night at the home of friends.
