Short quote for Vo Rogue
NZPA-AAP j w : Melbourne Bookmakers are taking no risks with the champion Queensland galloper, Vo Rogue, in' the sAustlso, ooo Futurity Stakes (1400 m at Caulfield today, even though the event is 400 m shorter than the gelding’s last race.
Vo Rogue is 4-9 favourite in early markets with Campaign King (7-2) and Oakleigh Plate runner-up. Rancho Ruler (8-1), the only other horses at single figure odds. However, with Vo Rogue in such devastating form it is no surprise to see him at such a short quote.
Vo Rogue broke the course record for 1800 metres, previously held by Boktisan, by 1.5 s in the St
George Stakes last Saturday when he ran 1:47.3. I In jhis previous race he bettered Amiable’s pa ; cesetter record in the Blamiey Stakes (1600 m at Flemington on February 13 by 0.2 s running a sensational 1:345. But major part-owner Jeff iPerry, has expressed his concern at Vo Rogue coming back 400 metres in (distance after his three-length win over Cossack Warrior in the St
George Stakes. ! "He’s a big chance of getting beaten in the Futurity because it is! only seven furlongs (1400 m Mr; Perry said. Trainer, Vic Rail, agrees with Mr Perry that the Futurity is a danger race for Vo Rogue because he is taking on sprinters the calibre of Campaign King: and Rancho Ruler. | i "But he has to run in it if he is going to be right
for the Australian Cup,” Rail said. ( I j Vo Rogue is also set for a tussle with New Zealand champion, Bonecrusher, and the imported Shergar stallion, Authaal, in the sAustsol, ooo Bicentenary Australian Cup (2000mj at Flemington on March 14. Vo i Rogue has! drawn barrier eight of the nine runners in the Futurity today. One thing the gelding’s connections don’t want is
a cha!nge in the weather. Vo Rogue has won each of his four starts this preparation — all in weight-for-age company I — by an aggregate of 16 and one quarter lengths I on good and fast tracks. But Vic Rail has warned that Vo Rogue simply cannot handle rain affected tracks. "He doesn’t like it wet,” Rail said. If successful, Vo Rogue will become the first!
horse to complete the St George Stakes-Futurity Stakes double since the outstanding galloper, Lord, in 1959. i I (ij’our of Vo Rogue’s opponents — Campaign King, King Phoenix (12l),j Abaridy (100-1), and Rancho Ruler — were first acceptors last Monday for the sAust4oo,ooo Newmarket Handicap (1200 m at Flemington on March 12.
