Salmon release
Sir, — You report (March 2) on the release |of salmon by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and North Canterbury Acclimatisation j Society in the Waimakariri River. I applaud this action as! continual investment must be made in this valuable resource to ensure its continued existence. However, I am completely mystified by the Ministry’s explanation as to the reason for the [salmon release — because [the Waimakariri River faced heavy [angling pressure. How can this be the case when it is impossible to impose pressure on a fishery by recreational anglers when there are no salmon there? Who will benefit from this release, the recreational angler or is it just another investment in commercial fishing? — Yours,' etc.,
NIGELiJOHNSON March 3, 1988.
