Front-row draw will help Sneedv Cheval in Waikato Cup

Special corresp’ondent Auckland It will take a big effort from one of the horses back in the handicap to beat Speedy Cheval! in the $30,000 Waikato Cup at the Waikato Harness Racing Club’s meeting at Claudelands this evening. Speedy Cheval is one of three entrants for the DB-spohsored cup off the front. His main opposition is expected to come from other four—year-olds. Elmer Gantry and Emcee, which along with Lord Lenny, are handicapped on 20 metres. ! Speedy Chevak is obviously the one to beat. Elmer Ge ntry and Emcee had their chance to beet him in the Cambridge Classic on February 19, when they all started off the front line in the mobile free-for-all. Speedy Cheval drew outside Emcee and Elmer Gantry, won the early race for the lead and stuck to his guns gallantly in the run home to win by half a length. On that occasion Speedy Cheval was driven by Peter Wolfenden, who this time is committed to drive one of his own team, Talptimu Vance. Robert Dunn will travel north to drive Speedy Cheval. At his previous start Speedy Cheval was just caugijt by Rostriever Hanover in the New Zealand' Messenger Championship. The margin was only a nose and' many thought he had beaten the favourite. Speedy Cheval can begin like a bullet from a stand. In the Southern Connection Handicap at Addington on November 13, he went straight to the front and won by three lengthsjfrom Ankorman, which has been in such fine form in the south recently.

There is no doubt Speedy Cheval has improved greatly since then. Lord Lenny scorched to an impressive win at Alexandra Park on February 13, pacing the 2200 metres from a stand in 2:46.5. At his only start since he was most unlucky when ififth at Addington on February 20. 1 j . He was trapped, full of running, behind a wall of horses at the finish. The deserved winner that time in the Honda 2000 was Rostriever Hanover. Lord Lenny has just had the one race at Claudelands. Last April he won the Hamiltonian Classic, beating Keystone Surprise aand Michele Bromac.' Elmer Gantry and Emcee would not surprise in the least if either won. They were second and third behind Speedy Cheval at Cambridge. Emcee beat Elmer Gantry in the Great Northern Bloodstock Classic in January at Claudelands and is a real little tradesman. Elmer Gantry, in particular, is a brilliant beginner from a standing start and his 20-metre disadvantage should be picked up before the field has gone very far. Of the remainder. Metal Mickey, which won this race last year from a mobile start, looks the best chance. He is off 30 metres this time, but was a creditable second to Lord Lenny on February 13 at his most recent outing. An even field of trotters will contest the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Glenview Hotel Handicap. Winter Song,, which is handily placed on the front is the likely winner. Our Reb and Regal Appeal which tends to race well at Claudelands, could press her close.
