Fillies take centre stage at Ellerslie in $120,000 G.N. Oaks tomorrow

Special correspondent Auckland The Great Northern Oaks at the Auckland Racing Club’; meeting at Ellerslie tomorrow shot Id ■ not suffer through being run on the new course. In fact the winner might need to be an eyen better stayer than usual. The distance is the raditional 2400 metres, being run for the first time on the inside track which teems to make uncommon demands on stamina whatever the distance. i A smallish field should ensure a good race. Like the Derby, the preat Northern Oaks has sometimes been cluttered. Only 14 will run this timed the smallest number for quite a'few years. The new course .is beii g used because of repair and maintenance; work on the old track which has beet going on since the beginning of this week.

The three-year-olds this season have been a fairly even lot. fillies as well as colts and geldings, and it is perhaps too late now for a really top one to emerge. But Candide, as the Oaks winner ar Trentham in January, and fourth in Ellerslie’s Derby is obviously a solid stayer. Impasada has the i distinction of leading the "Filly oftthe Year” points table, and Ton of Luck and Amalass are shaping up promisingly. All four are in tomorrow and all good prospects to be in the finish. Except for the O'Sullivan-trained Impasada, they come from the central districts of the North Island as do, quite remarkably, no fewer than nine of the 14 assured of starts. •' i ■ J Candide won the Oaks, at Trentham, over 2400 m. in good style!|and except for being forced over extra ground she would have been : closer in the New II

Zealand Derby. She was again wide before finishing fourth behind Impasada, jSavana City and Ton of Luck in the 2000 metres Lindauer Stakes at Ellerslie last Saturday. However, luck in the running could hardly be said to have gone Ton of Luck’s way, and it was hard to take anything! from the performance of Impasada, which had to go so quickly from her very wide barrier position. Trainers, Dave and Paul O’Sullivan, had been tempted not to run Impasada in the G.N. Oaks, believing the distance a bit much for her. They would have taken much heart, though, from the generous way she lasted the Lindauer's 2000 metres. Impasada. a winner of six of her 13 races, certainly has the speed. From so close to the inside at the start she is

almost certain to be one of the leaders around the first turn and it is not hard to visualise her being there still at the finish. ' Amalass, from Woodville, tried the Oaks (at Trentham and performed with a good) deal of credit for fourth. She finished (as well as she did when second behind Master Raj in an intermediate 1600 (metres last Saturday. Capdide's trainer. Geoff Haigh. of Levip, : has a good second string: in Serestriria and Paddy Busuttin, who operates stables at Foxion and Riccarton will have two chances as well — Coconut Ice andjßed Chiffon. Cp'conut Ice has won three of her last four races and .managed 2000 metres well (enough two starts back when third at Foxion. Shhe took a 1600 metres for three-year-olds last time out at Awapuni on : H
