Hygiene laws delay goat processing
PA I Wellington Problems with the Interpretation of Ministry of Agriculture hygiene regulations is causing delays in killing and processing goats. As a result, goat meat processing companies are limiting the amount’; of stock they buy unt 1 the problems are resolved, the Mohair Prod icers’ Association said. Industry’ sources said there was hope the problems could be sorted.out within 10 days. The Goat Meat In lustry Development Com nittee said it is concerned at the impact of the holdup on goat farmers want ng to sell animals. _ The main killin’ and processing period : for goats starts shortly and given the expected increased numbers for slaughter this year, the industry is treatir g the issue as urgent. Delays in returis' for goat meat could seriously affect the liquidity of many goat farmers and jeopardise further development of the industry’s processing sector.
