Full complement for cadet unit
By
DAVE WILSON
Overwhelming public interest in the new army cadet unit in Christchurch has ensured it a full complement even before the unit’s official formation.
The City of Christchurch Cadet Corps Unit will be officially formed next Monday evening, but early interest in the group has already produced 72 applicants — at least 20 more than its maximum allowable complement. Mr Russell Gregory says that he expects a fair degree of competition among the young candidates who have already vied for the 10 positions
as non-commissioned officers. Mr Gregory says that the purpose of next Monday’s meeting at King Edward Barracks is to form a support committee for the cadet corps. There are no restrictions on the committee numbers.
The support committee’s role will include fund raising. Colonel Ron Turner, the Commandant of the New Zealand Cadet Forces, will attend the meeting.
While the unit is not calling for applications to join the ranks, it will consider applicants displaying outstanding potential, said Mr Gregory.
